The Reasons for Hell’s Torments: Impenitence and Unbelief
“Repent, and believe in the Gospel” (Mark 1:15, NASB).
“This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from Heaven in blazing fire with His powerful angels. He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the Gospel of our Lord Jesus” (2 Thessalonians 1:7-8).
“Unless you repent, you too will all perish” (Luke 13:3).
Jesus said: “Whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil…Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him…If anyone does not remain in Me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned” (John 3:18-19, 36; 15:6).
1. God’s Righteous Punishment for Sin (or Disobedience to God’s Commandments) (Matthew 24:45-25:46; Luke 16:19-31; Romans 6:23; Hebrews 10:27-30; James 5:1-5).
2. Wickedness, Ungodliness, and Carnality (Matthew 3:10; 5:20; 7:19; Romans 2:1-12; 3:7-8).
3. Hypocrisy (so-called “Christians” who live ungodly lives) (Matthew 7:21-23; 24:51).
4. IMPENITENCE (irrepentance; or hardness of heart, not feeling regret for one’s sins, nor trying to change and live a holy life; resistance to godly living) (Mark 9; Matthew 3:7; 5:22; 7:24-27; Luke 13:1-5).
5. UNBELIEF in the Cross of Christ (that is, actively resisting faith in the cross; not by accident, but on purpose; willingly making it a point to reject Jesus and His sacrifice) (Matthew 8:10-12; Romans 5:9-21; John 3:16-36; 5:24-29; 15:1-8).
6. Jesus is Judge, King, and Lawgiver; and He Unleashes the Wrath of God Against All His Enemies, to Pay Them Back with Justice for Their Impenitence and Unbelief–That is, For Rejecting the Gospel (Matthew 3:7; 7:23; John 14:10; Romans 1:18-32; 2:5-8; 2 Thessalonians 1:8; Hebrews 6:2; 10:27-30; James 4:12; 2 Peter 2:13).
7. Prepared for the Devil, Demons, and All the Wicked (Matthew 25:41).
8. Because God Shows No Favoritism to the Wicked, On Account of Their Stubborn Rebellion and Unbelief in the Gospel–He Blots Their Names Out of the Book of Life (Romans 2:8-11; Revelation 20:15).
