Spirit-Filled Living and God’s Eternal Plan (Romans 8)
What the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
–Romans 8:3-4 (NIV)–
The Spirit helps us in our weakness.
We do not know what we ought to pray for,
but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people
in accordance with the will of God.
–Romans 8:26-27 (NIV)–
Those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.

Confronting Catholic and Protestant Easy Believism (Galatians 6)
The works of the flesh are evident:
sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery,
enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions,
divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these.
I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who
do such things WILL NOT INHERIT
THE KINGDOM OF GOD.
–Galatians 5:19-21 (ESV)–
The one who sows to his own flesh
will from the flesh reap corruption,
but the one who sows to the Spirit
will from the Spirit reap ETERNAL LIFE.
–Galatians 6:8 (ESV)–
The times of ignorance God overlooked,
but now he commands
all people everywhere to REPENT.
–Acts 17:30 (ESV)–
SUBMIT yourselves therefore to God.
Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
–James 4:7 (ESV)–
Strive for peace with everyone,
and for the HOLINESS
without which no one will see the Lord.
–Hebrews 12:14 (ESV)–

A Theology of Suffering, Part 9: Depression Through Many Temptations
To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He might be glorified.
–Isaiah 61:3 (KJV)–
Now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: that the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ.
–1 Peter 1:6-7 (KJV)–
Think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: but rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.
–1 Peter 4:12-13 (KJV)–
—
Sanctified afflictions have, through the grace of God, an immediate and direct tendency to holiness. Through the operation of his Spirit, they humble, more and more, and abase the soul before God.

Lorenzo Dow was an early Methodist evangelist who had many dreams and visions from God, including a Hell dream that came after agonizing prayer, and compelled him into Methodist circuit preaching. He preached hard and heavy against sin like Leonard Ravenhill did, was opposed and criticized heavily by Methodist leaders for preaching so hard against sin; and his meetings were often marked by outpourings of the Holy Spirit that made his scoffers go into Quaker jerks to punish them for their blasphemy.
