The same shall drink of the wine of THE WRATH OF GOD, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of HIS INDIGNATION; and he shall be TORMENTED WITH FIRE AND BRIMSTONE in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: and THE SMOKE OF THEIR TORMENT ASCENDETH UP FOR EVER AND EVER: and THEY HAVE NO REST DAY NOR NIGHT.
–Revelation 14:10-11 (KJV)–
THE BEAST was taken, and with him THE FALSE PROPHET that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. THESE BOTH WERE CAST ALIVE INTO A LAKE OF FIRE BURNING WITH BRIMSTONE.
–Revelation 19:20 (KJV)–
He laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him A THOUSAND YEARS…And THE DEVIL that deceived them WAS CAST INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE AND BRIMSTONE, WHERE THE BEAST AND THE FALSE PROPHET ARE, AND SHALL BE TORMENTED DAY AND NIGHT FOR EVER AND EVER.
–Revelation 20:2, 10 (KJV)–
I agree with 100% of what Joe Schimmel argues about eternal punishment in Hell, but I don’t agree that an annihilationist, a person that currently or even stubbornly holds to a Hell-denying view–to the extent that a person might say people in Hell don’t exist anymore–I really can’t say a person like that is born again of the Holy Spirit. I would consider annihilationism a shade of unbelief, almost in the agnosticism category. I mean, people make mistakes all the time, but this is ridiculous. I find it almost impossible that a person could be indwelt by the Holy Spirit of God, and then neglect God’s Word to such an extent, so as not to believe in the eternal punishment of the lake of fire. I find it very, very doubtful that Chris Date is a genuinely regenerated believer in the true Gospel. I think Joe was very charitable, but I really don’t think a person that holds to Chris’ view could ever be in the state of salvation: its the same as rejecting the Gospel, its a tripartisan issue–it doesn’t matter if you’re Catholic, Calvinist, or Wesleyan–eternal punishment is a non-negotiable aspect of saving faith.
