He Had to Get to the Cross – Joseph Absher

Thorn again … Jim Caviezel as Jesus in Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ (2004).As I was meditating on the cross, it occurred to me the number of times Jesus was beaten down; and yet He got up determined to die on the cross. He set His face like a flint to go to Jerusalem, knowing the betrayal, the pain and the rejection and the shame He faced there. Because He had to get to the cross. He went to the garden of Gethsemane knowing He would struggle in agony and distress in wrestling with His humanity. Because He had to get to the cross. He could not die when He was beaten down to the ground. He could not die while He was brought to nothing. He could not quit or lie down or die apart from the cross. He had to get up and get to the cross. He could not give up the ghost climbing Golgotha’s hill because he had to get to the cross. He had to get to the cross to open a fountain where the souls of men can be cleansed and washed and made new! He had to get to the cross and suffer and die and be made an offering for sin. He could have laid down exhausted and bailed out. But He had to get up that hill and get to the cross and die on the cross, the just for the unjust. He had to die on the cross to fulfill the Scriptures. His body had to be broken that the power of sin could be broken. He had to die on the cross to be made a curse to break the curse. He died on the cross of a broken heart to heal the brokenhearted. He was pierced that the water and blood would be poured out; and that every drop of His precious blood would be spent for me and for you! He spent the last full measure of His life that we might have life in full measure!
