It was a converted garage: this was the Southside Gospel Tabernacle: his first building before his church grew in size (1928-1940); and they moved into the bigger auditorium nearby. I had a relative in Chicago, who when I was a boy, had those ice cube style windows in his bathroom.
This was the bigger Southside Alliance Church building that was built next door as an add-on to the old building. This was when Dr. Tozer became a household name through the publication of his books (1941-1959). He published The Pursuit of God in 1948.
Dr. Tozer’s church buildings still stand to this day. You can find them on Google Maps! 714 W. 70th St., Chicago, Illinois 60621 marks the location of the old building. It is now the property of a Zion Temple Missionary Baptist Church, a black denomination. Tozer’s new building is owned by the same congregation: the address, just around the corner, is 7010 S. Union Ave, Chicago, Illinois 60621.

Note that “blessed are the meek” (Matthew 5:5) is not about nor a teaching against expressing anger or indignation against injustice–like sexual perversion and abuse for example, preaching sermons against sin, preaching repentance, or about preaching sermons against injustice, as is required in evangelistic ministry. This is about the way we carry ourselves in relation to others in the church, in business, in family, etc. There is a sense of self-control there. This is more related to people in pastoral ministry, because of their constant interaction with people acting annoying with petty irritations and nuisances. Not being easily provoked by people’s comments or crazy behavior. To say that Matthew 5:5 is a teaching against the whole idea of preaching with anger against flagrant societal sin, would be to condemn John the Baptist, Jesus Christ himself, Stephen, Peter, and Paul (Matt. 3:7; 23:13-39; Acts 7:51; 8:20; 13:10).

Miguel de Molinos, author of The Spiritual Guide, and father of Quietism. He taught mental passivity, emotional stoicism, and self-annihilation. To mortify the flesh and allow the spirit to find its place in perfect contemplation on God. His anti-emotional teaching was condemned by the Catholic Church in 1687. The Spock-like expression in the painting is clear. You can almost hear him calmly say, “Don’t be angry, just look at the candle.”

Dr. Roger Olson, Arminian Theology: Myths and Realities (IVP, 2006). Not to be confused with Gordon C. Olson, the holiness preacher who completely rejected propitiatory, penal, substitutionary atonement in his pamphletThe Moral Government of God (Men for Missions, 1966). To make matters more confusing, there was a Baptist theologian named C. Gordon Olson, which I mixed up with him in this podcast. This last guy did not reject substitutionary atonement. The first guy is the heretic teacher: Gordon C. Olson–and he’s had a clear influence on at least some street preachers on YouTube, especially those associated with SOAPA.
