Prophetic Word? I Saw a Demon of False Religion and Legalism

This is an old painting that hangs at the Luther House. It commemorates the time when the devil appeared to Martin Luther while he was translating the Bible at Wartburg Castle. He saw an open vision of the devil and threw his inkwell at him to make him go away. The ink stain is still on the wall today. The painting suggests that the devil was offering to help him attain riches as a Catholic cardinal, which is why the devil has cardinal’s clothing on. The devil was probably telling him to stop translating the Bible; and that he would help him to become a rich and popular Catholic leader in a compromised church culture.
