After all’s been said and done, the intense type of evangelistic preaching that we see in Dr. John R. Rice with Sword of the Lord Publications, David Wilkerson with World Challenge, and Leonard Ravenhill with Last Days Ministries–is that of the marginalized John the Baptist preacher outside of Jerusalem, outside of the Bible college, outside of the denominational headquarters, just a touch outside of the independent Baptist and Church of God campmeeting, pushing for a higher level of preaching intensity, without the stuffy clergy resistance of elders that constantly plead for positive preaching and lukewarm moderation. This means itinerant evangelism, or bookings, for independent Baptist, Wesleyan-holiness, and Pentecostal churches. If invited to a Church of God, Assembly of God, or Southern Baptist church, that would truly be a rare thing, because of the positive confession and seeker-sensitive emphasis. Ravenhill preached once at Charles Stanley’s church and it left him pale as a ghost. Expect the same thing today. –J.B.
