In this speech, Reagan says that he was a Democrat until around 1964; but he changed his mind and became a Republican, because he believed the U.S. federal government was becoming socialistic, with a 37% income tax. The U.S. government spends more than it earns from taxation. Business owners have no hope of financial success in totalitarian, heavily militaristic (giant red armies funded by heavy taxes), and communist countries like Cuba–oppressive, Orwellian, dystopian, 1984-like police states with Gestapo and KGB; and we need to make sure that the U.S.A. doesn’t become like that country. “STOP THE ADVANCE OF SOCIALISM IN THE UNITED STATES!”–this expression was met with thunderous applause. He believed in preaching against communist ideas from Marx, Lenin, and Stalin. He compared communist dictators to the Pharaoh of Exodus (26:05). –J.B.
