The early church never came close to worshiping Mary. You won’t find it in the lives of the Desert Fathers, St. Patrick, or St. Benedict. Prayers to Mary were not even on the radar in the lives of the early Catholic saints. Mary was simply considered one of many saints in the early canon of Christian hagiography, much like Protestants regard the names of Calvin, Wesley, and Luther today.

Towards THE END OF THE FOURTH CENTURY, the name Mary becomes rather frequent among Christians; this serves as another sign of the veneration they had for the Mother of God…NO ONE WILL SUSPECT THE EARLY CHRISTIANS OF IDOLATRY, AS IF THEY HAD PAID SUPREME WORSHIP TO MARY’S PICTURES OR NAME; but how are we to explain the phenomena enumerated, unless we suppose that the early Christians venerated Mary in a special way? —THE CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA (1912)

As a Wesleyan, I have what’s called an Anglo-Catholic view of theology: this means that the Bible is primary, theological tradition is secondary, reason is third, and personal spiritual experience comes in fourth place. When it comes to theological tradition, I mainly rely on John Wesley and the theologians he relied on: which includes a collection of Puritans, Anglicans, church fathers, and occasional Catholic devotional books like The Practice of the Presence of God. With that being said, Wesley also affirmed this in the Articles of Religion: “The Romish doctrine concerning purgatory, pardon, worshiping, and adoration, as well of images as of relics, and also invocation of saints, is a fond thing, vainly invented, and grounded upon no warrant of Scripture, but repugnant to the Word of God.”

There appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. –Matthew 17:3 (NIV)

A precedent can be established here that departed saints can SPONTANEOUSLY visit the godly. Wesley even wrote that “I never had anything of this kind with regard to any but those that died in faith. In dreams I have had exceedingly lively conversations with them, and I doubt not but they were then very near” (Letter to Lady Maxwell). But notice what is NOT going on after this happens:

1. Worship of the Dead.

2. Adoration of the Dead.

3. Creating Relics of the Dead.

4. Invoking the Presence of the Dead.

All of these things are done in the Catholic Church, but are rejected by Wesley and all Protestants, because they all point to an occult practice called necromancy or spiritism. “When they say to you, ‘Inquire of the mediums and the necromancers who chirp and mutter,’ should not a people inquire of their God? Should they inquire of THE DEAD on behalf of the living?” (Isaiah 8:19, ESV). I think one of the unfortunate results of Mary worship is to make spiritual men effeminate as they are engaging in a kind of goddess worship. It also encourages feminism with a kind of Catholic Jezebel spirit, because it exalts a female icon to a position of absolute authority over all Catholic men, which is against the complementarian and patriarchal structure explained in Ephesians 5:21-33. As a matter of fact, the LGBT movement blew up after all these Mary visions happened in the 1980s and 1990s. “There is one God, and ONE MEDIATOR between God and men, the man CHRIST JESUS” (1 Timothy 2:5, KJV). –J.B.
