Another view is, that the brimstone that falls on the wicked are boulders thrown on people by demons who fly up into the air of Hell.

It may be that volcanoes are in Hell, to launch the brimstone into the air, so that sulfuric fireballs can fall on the wicked burning in the lake of fire.
